Nurses Day and National Nurses Week are celebrated every year from May 6th through May 12th, which is also Florence Nightingale's birthday. These dates help to position National Nurses Week as an established event across the nursing profession. Over the years, National Nurses week has been enhanced to add additional festivities and recognition. In 1998, May 8 was named National Student Nurses Day, to recognize those that are studying hard to enter the profession. Student Nurses are celebrated each year on the 8th during Nurses Week. In 2003, National School Nurse Day was added to be celebrated on the Wednesday within National Nurses Week each year. In addition to formal recognition and appreciation, many employers choose Nurses week as a time to provide Nurses gifts that show their appreciation for a job well done.
Tafford is proud to be the official scrubs member benefit partner for the American Nurses Association (ANA). The American Nurses Association has supported and promoted the nursing profession since 1896. Each of ANA's state nurses associations recognize national Nurses appreciation week at both state and regional levels. Every member organization hold celebrations during National Nurses Week to recognize the many contributions that nurses and nursing make to their community every day.
The ANA promotes National Nurses Week recognition programs through the state and district nurses associations, other specialty nursing organizations, schools, health care companies, and individual medical institutions.
"Nurse Day" was originally proposed by the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in 1953, but official federal government recognition for Nurse Day did not come until 1974, when President Nixon issued a proclamation declaring National Nurses Week. In 1990, ANA board of directors officially proclaimed National Nurses Week with permanent dates of May 6-12.
While Nurses provide an invaluable service to the community every day, Nurses week is your chance to show appreciation for the Nurses you work with. We recommend showing Nurses appreciation with a gifts for nurses of new scrubs or Gift Certificates that your favorite nurses can use to freshen up their nursing uniform.
Whether it's Nurses Week, or ANY week, Tafford thanks all Nurses for the hard work they do to provide a high level of patient care. Thanks for all that you do!
