Winnie the Pooh, often shortened to Pooh Bear and once even referred to as Edward Bear, is a fictional bear created by A A Milne. A.A. Milne wrote a series of books about Winnie the Pooh, his friend Christopher Robin, and their friends at 100 Acre Wood. Several other characters, including Eeyore, Piglet, Tigger, Kanga and Roo were based on stuffed animals belonging to Christopher Robin. Other characters including Rabbit and Owl were based on animals that lived in the surrounding area of Milne's country home. �The character initially was featured in the children's books Winnie the Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner. Milne also wrote a few poems about Winnie the Pooh in the kid�s poetry books Now We Are Six and When We Were Very Young. All 4 volumes were expertly illustrated by E H Shepard. The Walt Disney Company adapted the Pooh stories into a series of Winnie the Pooh short films that became one of the company's most successful global franchises.

The Pooh stories were translated into many languages, including Alexander Lenard's Latin translation, Winnie ille Pu, first published in 1958, and which became the first foreign-language book to be featured on the New York Times Bestseller List, and is the only book in Latin ever to have been featured on the prestigious list.
