If you have wondered if there was a significant future in the nursing profession, wonder no more. America has experienced a
shortage in nursing recently and there has never been a better time to join this exciting field. It does take a special type
of person to excel in the demanding medical fields, but if you have the compassion and determination to take care of people
in any situation, then there are several reasons why nursing is the growth job of our generation.
You may already know that there are more nurses than doctors. The reason for this is obvious. A doctor can see several patients
in a day and then leave the rest of the work up to their competent nursing staff. In fact, RN's make up the largest percentage
of the health care industry. Currently there are roughly 2.4 million jobs for RNs. For good candidates, the sky is the limit in
terms of both professional growth and satisfaction.
Nurses have many options in terms of where they work. Those who want regular hours and evenings off will want to work at a
traditional doctor's office. Most of the time, the hours are week days with evenings off. In this setting, a nurse may be
requested to work on some Saturdays. However, for registered nurses, 3 out of 5 jobs will be found in hospitals. The advantage
of working in a hospital is that there are various specialties to choose from. A qualified nurse could work in surgery or with
cardiac patients. There are always the options of the labor floor or in the Emergency Department. The choices are almost limitless
and leave a lot of room for growth and learning.
This rewarding career allows nurses to make positive changes in the lives of their patients. It isn't as if a nurse is limited to
just working as a support person in a hospital or a doctor's office. Many are choosing to further their education and become nurse
practitioners. This advanced degree gives the nurse practitioner more flexibility in the amount and type of care they are able to
provide. In many cases, nurse practitioners see patients independently and consult with an MD in the most complicated of cases. Of
course, if the RN prefers to stay in the more traditional role, there are many different specialties to select from. With the
current shortage of nurses, a well trained nurse can pretty much go into whichever specialty he or she chooses.
For example, of the many options available for registered nurses, hospital and doctors office work are just the tip of the iceberg.
Nurses are called on to educate newly diagnosed patients and their families on nutrition, prescriptions, and general health care.
Also, nurses are often trained to perform a battery of different tests and analyze the results. Some nurses chose to take their
education on a different track and become involved with therapy and rehabilitation. Some discover a calling to help terminally ill
patients and their families cope with grief and feelings. This specialty requires different training, but is a worthwhile endeavor
for the right type of nurse.
