Batik is an Indonesian-Malay word that describes a wax resist dyeing
technique used on fabric -- covering areas of cloth with a dye-resistant
substance to prevent them color absorption. The word comes from the Javanese
word "amba", meaning &"to write",
and the Javanese word for point or dot, "titik." Batik has been art form and a craft for centuries.
In Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and the world's finest batik cloth is
still made there. Contemporary batik artists use a host of techniques including
etching, discharge dyeing, stencils, different tools
for waxing and dyeing, wax recipes with different resist values. Batik artists
use a host of textiles including silk, cotton, wool, leather, paper or even
wood and ceramics.
Much of the popularity of Batik is due to the fact that the batik technique
offers many opportunities for artistic freedom as patterns are applied by
drawing rather than through weaving. Another factor in its popularity is its durability.
The colors in Batik are much more resistant to wear than those of painted or
printed fabrics because the cloth is completely submersed in the colorant and
the areas not protected by resist will not fade easily.
